With these words Anja, a friend of mine, surprised me at a café on that August day 26 years ago. I remember her tense expression as she leaned towards me and whispered:
- Actually I'm a trance medium and channel a spirit called Uranus.
I didn't fully understand the meaning of her words then and especially not how they would change my life. I had known Anja for seven years and knew that she was a New Age - enthusiast. She claimed to have seen elves and gnomes in her yard and a headless man in her kitchen once. And now this revelation!
- What is a trance medium actually? I asked perplexed, and Anja told me this:
When Anja was young, she hadn't believed in anything supernatural although she had had unexplainable experiences as a child. Whenever she made the mistake of telling about them to adults, they told her she was a strange child. So, Anja learned to repress this side of her. Her sensitivity started to fade away along the years anyway and Anja grew up to be an adult who didn't even believe in God. Not until she was already thirty-five she somehow unwillingly ended up in a medium sitting; because of the indisputable evidence she saw there, she immediately started believing in afterlife at least, if not in God. Around those times she was persuaded to see the most famous clairvoyant in Finland who immediately saw Anja's exceptional sensitivity and hidden talents. He stressed that if Anja wanted to feel balanced, she had to own and control her abilities and put them into use. So, Anja decided to join a development circle held by The Spiritualist Association Of Finland. In the circle the members did sensitizing exercises, draw pictures from their subconscious, learned telepathy and transmitting healing energy.
One time in the circle Anja started to have a choking sensation in her throat and she felt like fainting. Other members noticed that Anja was pale and looked unwell and they asked if everything was okay. Anja told them that she felt exactly like someone was trying to say something using her throat. Other members of the circle had been waiting for something like this for years and realized immediately that a spirit was trying to get in contact! They suggested that it would be better if she opened her mouth and let the message come out. Anja was petrified but she opened her mouth with great effort when these words came out: light of God.
From that moment on began Anja's work as a medium. At first, the spirit she channeled introduced himself through automatic writing, when Anja held a pen in her hand and the pen moved on the paper by itself. The spirit didn't have an actual name; he asked the circle members to call him Uranus because he wanted to convey to mankind qualities like truth, freedom and self-discovery which in astrology are linked to planet Uranus. Uranus told that he had lived on Earth among others as a mendicant but would not return on Earth as a human being anymore. He also told how Anja was going to be trained as a medium, for Anja's body, and especially her speech organs, had to be able to transmit the vast energy of Uranus. To Anja this was the toughest part of the training: she often started trembling as if she was cold turning very pale at the same time. She would have painful spasms and sometimes her tongue would stick out as if she was a lizard. Once Anja noticed to her horror that the chair she was sitting on was standing on two legs only!
After Anja's body had been "tuned", Uranus began to use her speech organs only and told that next, Anja would be trained to fall into trance.
- Oh yes, the trance! I cried out. - Can anybody become a trance medium?
No, Anja replied. Every person has paranormal abilities which reinforce when you develop them, but one is born to be a trance medium. Uranus told that already before her birth, Anja had agreed that she would work as a medium in this life. Every person has in his body an etheric vehicle which is a storehouse for certain kind of vital energies coming from the sun and earth; this energy acts as a bridge of consciousness between the spirit and the body. People who have a lot of this vital energy-
matter have the potential of becoming a trance medium. Trance is a deep sleep- state and it helps bypass the medium's own mind; it enables the intelligence of the spirit to manipulate the energy-matter and work with it. Anja didn't need any special rites or rituals to fall into trance; all she needed to do was to give permission to use herself as a channel. Anja never remembered anything from the trance itself: she kind of fell asleep and sat motionless during the entire sitting. Waking from trance felt like sitting on the bottom of the ocean and starting to rise slowly towards the surface.
After Anja had been trained to be a medium, Uranus started acting as the leader of the development circle. When people noticed how well Uranus was able to help the circle members, also people from outside of the circle started asking her for private sittings.
- Private sittings! I gasped. - Could I too participate in one of those, please?
- I think it can be arranged, Anja smiled. - When would you like to have it?
